An inside look at the The Dawn Bombs, a band based in Bellingham, Washington who have a unique pop, jazz, indie sound. Band members include Molly Engelberg, Ben Waight, and Alan Schellenberger. Their website: https://www.thedawnbombs.com Video produced, filmed and edited by yours truly :) Jessica Vangel All music used is THE DAWN BOMBS!!
Ryan Dudenbostel and Patrick Roulet, two professors in the music department at Western Washington University, decided one day that they were going to take on a challenge unlike anything they had done before; they were going to play Steve Reich’s Music for 18 Musicians, a minimalist piece that takes around an hour to complete with no breaks. With a handpicked team of student musicians, and with only a few days to rehearse, the orchestra pulled off an incredible feat of physical and mental endurance to a packed auditorium of students and community music lovers. Filmed, edited and produced by Roisin Cowan-Kuist, Brinnon Kummer, and Jessica Vangel for a Digital Media in Journalism class at Western Washington University in winter of 2019. Featuring Ryan Dudenbostel and Mieke Doezema. Music for 18 Musicians by Steve Reich
Jessica Vangel Films This was just a lil cinematography exercise for my class but I wanted to make mine into a little story :)
A lonesome ghost becomes scared of an ally before realizing that is exactly how she's been treated... My first crack at silhouette animation! I cut all of these shapes and characters out of cardstock with a box cutter... My back hurts.
A short film we are calling RUT. Made in Bellingham, WA

In this montage, B-roll edit style, I have compiled the top 3 (and most obvious 3) places to take Bellingham newbies.

The local theater in Bellingham is a spectacle of culture in our town. Here is a detailed history of it. (Please, I know my voice over is bad)
Based off of the Phillip Hoose Novel. This is the (trailer version) of Claudette Colvin's story.
WWU J305 PhotoJournalism Class. Person shown: Brooke Weisbecker, 20, Communications student and employee of Ferndale Farmstead Cheese Creamery.

My very first Reel. The process was a very odd experience for me, looking at all that I’ve shot and picking “what’s best.” It was a very empowering experience and realigned my self confidence as a female filmmaker.

The Dawn Bombs are a Bellingham band with a unique sound as well as motivated and inspiring members. Here is my short doc on them.

“Music For 18 Musicians” is a group project I was a part of documenting an hour-long piece- yes only one piece- performed by WWU musicians. 18 of them to be exact. My group members were Roisin Cowan-Cuist and Brinnon Kummer

“Mansplained” is a short assignment I created for a camera movement assignment for a visual media in journalism course. I decided to give the assignment a little bit of story.

“Lonely Ghostie” is my very first attempt at animation. I used stop-motion silhouette animation for this project and it involved hours of cutting card stock, moving every piece ever so slightly and taking thousands of photos to get the final product. This was an assignment for a time-based art class.

“Rut” is a poetic piece Jessica Niles and I created as an independent study over the summer. I filmed and edited and she selected the poem and narrated.

“Hang the DJ Video Essay- Black Mirror on Society & Love” is a videographic criticism piece analyzing a Black Mirror episode “Hang the DJ” and more specifically, one scene in it. This involved a lot of screen recording and a lot of editing to get the final product. This was published here

“Top 3 Places to bring Bellingham Visitors” is a short video I created to turn into the school newspaper “The Western Front.” It was not published but I received full points from the professor.

“The Pickford Film Center- A History” is a video I made on the history of the local film house The Pickford Film Center which brings independent and local film to big screens in Bellingham, WA

“Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice” is a film trailer my group members and I created based off of the novel by Phillip Hoose. This was for a Young Adult Literature & Film Class.

This was a photo story I made into a video by interviewing my subject about the job which I photographed her doing. This was an assignment for PhotoJournalism.
